  • Mental performance coaching helps athletes, performers, and professionals strengthen the mental side of performance—skills like focus, confidence, motivation, stress management, and resilience. Just as physical training prepares the body, mental performance coaching trains the mind for consistent, optimal performance.

  • Sessions usually involve a mix of conversation, guided exercises, and practical strategies tailored to your goals. You’ll leave each session with tools and techniques you can immediately apply to training, competition, or other performance settings.

  • Session length and frequency vary based on your goals, schedule, and needs. For adults, sessions are typically 50 minutes and take place weekly or biweekly. For teens and youth athletes, both the length and frequency of sessions may be adjusted to ensure they are developmentally appropriate and engaging.

  • Many clients begin noticing shifts—such as improved focus, reduced anxiety, or stronger motivation—within the first few sessions. Lasting change and mastery of new skills typically come with consistent practice and continued coaching over time.

  • The typical AMPS program is designed as a 24 session plan for adults, 18 sessions for teens, and 15 sessions for youth athletes. Following this program helps clients get the full experience and achieve the best results. While completing the program is strongly recommended, it is not required. Clients may also choose to continue their coaching beyond completion of the AMPS program for ongoing support and continued development.

  • All AMPS sessions and workshops are conducted virtually unless otherwise arranged. In-person team or organizational work may be available by request and typically requires travel accommodations.

  • No. Mental performance coaching is not therapy or counseling. Therapy often focuses on diagnosing and treating mental health conditions, while coaching is about skill development, mindset training, and performance enhancement. If deeper mental health concerns arise, clients may be referred to a licensed mental health professional.

  • Not at all. Mental performance coaching is for anyone who wants to make the jump from good to great, of from great to even better. Some clients come in to overcome challenges like performance anxiety, while others simply want to sharpen their focus, increase confidence, and gain a competitive edge.

  • Absolutely. While many clients are athletes, mental performance coaching also supports musicians, dancers, actors, business leaders, students, military personnel, and anyone who performs under pressure. Visit our Who We Serve page to see how mental performance enhancement skills are adaptable to fit any performance environment.

  • Yes. AMPS works with youth and adolescent athletes beginning at age 7. Mental performance training is adapted to be developmentally appropriate, ensuring concepts, activities, and discussions align with the athlete’s age, sport experience, and individual needs.

  • Youth sessions are grounded in the AMPS system, with mental skills taught in ways that align with an athlete’s age, sport experience, and stage of development. Training is engaging and age-appropriate, often using simple language, interactive exercises, and real-world sport examples to help athletes understand and apply skills effectively. As athletes mature, sessions evolve to include more advanced strategies and self-directed skill use, while maintaining a structured, systematic approach.

  • Parents play an important supportive role in the mental performance training process. While sessions are athlete-centered, parents may be included periodically to support skill carryover, reinforce key concepts, and help create an environment that encourages growth and consistency. Specific levels of parent involvement are discussed collaboratively to best support the athlete’s development while fostering independence and ownership of mental skills.

  • AMPS coaching sessions are not covered by insurance. As coaching is not a form of medical or psychological treatment, it is usually not covered by health insurance. Sessions are considered a professional service, similar to hiring a personal trainer or executive coach.

  • The best first step is scheduling a free consultation. This gives us a chance to discuss your goals, answer any questions, and decide if AMPS is the right fit for you.
